Here is my Opinion of the story, please post responses below.
A Good Man is Hard to Find is a great story about how many people prioritize reputation over character. The story is framed as a mid century vacation trip with a Nuclear Family, Bailey, his Wife, John Wesley, June Star and Bailey’s mother who is referred to simply as the Grandmother. The author sets the tone with this example and then begins to disassemble our feeling about the perceived American Dream.
The Grandmother is shown immediately to be a person that is willing to lie to get her way. She lies about why she does want the family to go to Florida, she lies about taking the cat with her, and she even lies to herself about the reason she is taking the cat. The most interesting part is that it is her manipulation that eventually causes the family to take a wrong turn. She is such a terrible person that she manipulates the feelings of her own grandchildren when it seems that her son will not be manipulated. She is the singular reason why the family is killed. Her own manipulations cause the death of her grandchildren. The problem that she faces is that in the end she is unable to recognize this.
The story itself is a very good story. O’Connor shows that she understands the true nature of the times. We see that the grandmother is willing to put her own child and his children into jeopardy.
