List Building

List building is essential for any player when you are going to a tournament. When I go to a tournament I try to create a list that does a few things.

1.) All Comers List

Can I deal with whatever my opponent has on the board? The Meta, especially when using the new FAQ, is more diverse now then it has been in a very long time. That means you have to deal with a lot of different things. How do you deal with a high toughness creature like a WraithKnight and a High Armor Vehicle like a Land Raider or Buzzgob’s Stompa? How about MSU or Bikes? There are only so many high strength Weapons and their points sink make it difficult to field the objective secure units that I want for Maelstrom or Objective based games. 2.) Maximizing your Troops

What is the maximum number of Objective Secure Units that I can fit into a list? I play Orkz, as you can probably tell, and Troops choices come pretty cheap. I can run 24 Objective Secure units into an 1850 list and still have enough room for Buzzgob’s Stompa, 4 Big Meks, and a Kustom Force Field. We call this a trash army, as most opponents will trash it in no time. (Or because I will throw it in the trash after day 2 of Michigan GT.) This is a list that I was looking at when I thought of Michigan this year:

As you can see with this sort of Mob mentality you can do well in grabbing objectives in the early game, but it lacks durability and with enough fire power you will be tabled by turn 4 in each game. So the question is how do we improve that list? We’ve got our troop choices, but where do we go from there? And can they be changed.

3.) Change

 

Changing the build of our troops is vital. Boyz are usually slow moving as far as troops choices go in the game. Compared to other armies like Eldar, White Scars, and Ravenwing that six inch movement is rough and to be honest the t-shirt saves don’t help. So what do we do? Well Forgeworld has helped us with that in Imperial Armour 8 with Zhadsnark Da Rippa. Zhardsnark is a 150 point model that gives us the following:

1.) Objective Secure Warbikers.
2.) Scout on the Unit of Warbikers he joins.
3.) +1 to our jink saves on the unit of Warbikers he joins.

That last piece is important because when you add in the +1 to jink Warbikers get for Turbo Boosting you end up with a 2+ cover on Warbikers who have 4+ armor. Add in a Painboy on a Bike and you have a 5+ FNP. So now our list changes to this:

In that list you still have a list that has 18 Objective Secure Units, but now they are more mobile and you have added Durability with Zhadsnarks Deathstar. Here’s the thing though, do we need that much Objective Secure in the modern game or do we need more versatility? I would argue more versatility. So where do we get it?

4.)More Versatility

 So we need to be able to deal with whatever is on the board like we spoke about in the first part of our story. One of the big additions to 7th was all of the dakka that is available to armies. There are a lot of armies out there that are brutal in the shooting phase, see my article on Chasing the Meta at Adepticon 2017: Will it win or will it break? for more on that. How then do we improve the Dakka for our little army? Mek Gunz are a viable option for the field.


Unlike Orkz, Grots have a Ballistic Skill of 3 which means that they are hitting on a 4+ and not a 5+.  This is a unit where you can take a Kannon for 18 points that has five wounds and Toughness 7 against shooting. A full unit of Kannons is 90 points and has 25 Wounds, the Emplacements have 3+ armor, and it’s all toughness 7 against shooting. I can eliminate two units of Boyz and add a Unit of Kannons and Lobbas all for 180 points. I can also make them more durable by adding a Skyshield landing pad which gives everything on the pad a 4+ Invulnerable save against shooting. Can we make it more effective? We sure can eliminate one of the Big Meks and one unit of Warbikers giving us the third unit of Guns to help out. This time I am going to give us three regular Kannons and two Traktor Kannons for those pesky fliers.

A much better list. Now what we need to do is buff our Stompa. He’s a stompa and needs to last! Fortunately it’s fairly inexpensive to do that with Mekz. The Mek repair rolls of a 5+ can get silly inside a Stompa. I’ll remove a unit of Warbikers and a unit of Boyz still giving the maximum number of troops in each Combined Arms Detachment. Adding two units of Loota’s. The Loota’s allow me to have 3 Meks for 14 points each in their unit, add that Big Mek that we still have as our HQ slot and now we have 8 rolls per turn to repair the Hull Points lost in each shooting phase. We now have 24 points left in our army. Add 8 more grots to the Mek Gunz and you have a full 1850 list like this one.
